Eliminate, Organize, and HIDE
Step One: Eliminate. Remove anything that remotely looks like, smells like, or acts like garbage. Including newspapers, food containers, food remnants on dishes, overflowing trash cans. Do a quick clean over obvious surfaces like your bathroom sink/mirror, dinner table, and kitchen counter. If there’s time, do a really quick sweep/vacuum in the main rooms.
Step Two: Organize. Neatly arrange cushions on couches, magazines on coffee tables, make the beds, put dishes away or at least in dishwasher. If it’s out in the open, at least make it look “neat”.
Step Three: Hide. Do a visual scan of each room to see if anything simply needs to go. Shove it in a closet, under your bed, or in a moving box until you have time to deal with it appropriately. Store moving boxes in the garage to keep rooms tidy. Put laundry in your hamper, or even hide them in the washer/dryer until you have time to sort them.
Turn on all the lights in the house, open all drapes or blinds to let in natural light, perhaps crack a window if the home is “stuffy”. Now run out the door and RELAX!
